| A closed containment fish farm design: six tank farm with a waste collection barge and utility shed. |
Closed containment systems provide a separation between farmed and wild salmon and allow much more control over what enters and leaves the farm system. Closed containment aquaculture systems have been designed to operate on land and in the ocean and have successfully raised many species including salmon.
In B.C., commercial scale trials are in the implementation stage. In 2007 a commercial scale closed containment project got underway near Campbell River, B.C.
From government and industry negotiations to engaging the marketplace, Living Oceans' work on solutions focuses on getting the transition to closed containment underway in BC. The health of our wild fish and ocean ecosystems depend on it!
As part of the Coastal Alliance for Aquaculture Reform, Living Oceans Society has:
- completed a "Framework for Dialogue" with Marine Harvest Canada, the largest salmon farming company on the B.C. coast
- worked to change federal and provincial policies and promote the move to full closed containment for salmon aquaculture
- encouraged thousands of consumers to express their concern about salmon farming to grocery leaders like Safeway
- brought together over 160 chefs, retailers and restaurants who are committed to not serving farmed salmon
