Your Livelihood
“My family fished for four generations, but my children may not have a future in this industry.”

In recent years, fisheries mismanagement and industrialized fishing have led to the decline of fish stocks, ocean health and of coastal communities.

“Salmon are the blood in the arteries of our coast.”

Sport fishermen spent almost $2 billion in B.C. in 2002, and the sector employed 20,000 people.

Losing wild salmon would seriously affect this vital part of B.C.'s coastal tourism.

Finding Solutions
As part of our work to reduce destruction of habitat, bycatch and over fishing, Living Oceans Society is reviewing fishing gear types used in Canada. In summer 2008 we will release an assessment of their impact on the ocean and recommend viable solutions.
