Your Environment

“I live 500 miles from the nearest ocean. It's not really part of my life.”

Whether you live in Saskatchewan or on Saltspring Island, the ocean affects the very air you breathe. The world's oceans absorb about one third of the carbon emissions we produce and generate about half of the oxygen we breathe.

How we treat our land affects our oceans.

Rain comes from oceans' evaporation. It falls on fields, washing fertilizer into rivers that run to the sea.

Fact:
Tiny microscopic ocean plants called phytoplankton breathe in carbon dioxide and release oxygen during photosynthesis, supplying 30 to 50 percent of the world’s oxygen.
