Reduce your use of plastics

Take a minute to look at the items around you. Chances are many of them are made of plastic. This isn’t surprising; almost everything we buy is plastic. If it isn’t, it often still comes packaged in plastic and/or put in a plastic bag. Canadians use an average of 55 million plastic bags each year. And in a country with cleaner, accessible drinking water than any other country on the planet, one in four Canadians still rely exclusively on plastic water bottles.

Discarded plastic can easily find its way in to the ocean, and in to the mouths of countless sea creatures. A recent study found that 35 percent of fish in the North Pacific have fragments of plastic in their stomachs.

Take the Plastics Pledge!

Pledge to take small steps to reduce your use of plastic. You can start by making one small change, such as investing in reusable water bottles, coffee mugs, food containers, or shopping bags, forgoing disposable plates and cups at your next party or barbeque, choosing not to buy items with unnecessary or superfluous packaging. Reducing your use of plastics is one easy, convenient and money-saving way to help protect your ocean. Encourage your family, friends and community to take the pledge as well. Make a commitment today. Together, we can make a difference.
