Ocean Exposures Photo Contest 2016

BELOW THE SURFACE CATEGORY

First Prize:  a trip for two with Stubbs Island Whale Watching is awarded to Heather McAlpine for "Ghostly Anemone"

Second Prize:   Six passes to the Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea are going to Louise Bennet for "Ocean Inukshuk", taken in Northern Newfoundland near St Anthony and Saint Lunaire-Griquet.

Third Prize:  This goes to Laura Burns for "Beachcomber's Dream", taken at Raft Cove, BC (after we cleaned it up, I think...) Laura wins the SeaHugger t-shirt of her choice.

 

WORK OR PLAY ON THE OCEAN CATEGORY

First Prize:  Goes to Kari Watkins for "Netting ocean abundance". Kari's prize is a full-colour book of ocean photography by Jeremy Koreski, entitled “This Is Nowhere”.

Second Prize:  Won by Jim Williams for "Enjoying the Serenity of Day's End", taken at Chesterman Beach, Tofino, BC. Jim will have two passes to the Ucluelet Aquarium to enjoy on his next trip to Tofino.

Third Prize:  Patty Conrad will be cooking up a storm with Living Oceans’ own cookbook, “Fish for Thought”, awarded for her "Winter Living by the Water" taken at Cowichan Bay, BC.

 

COASTAL WILDLIFE CATEGORY

First Prize:  This is awarded to Laura Burns for "Seashell by the Seashore".  Laura's prize is a gift package of extraordinary travel apparel by Lifestyle Over Luxury.

Second Prize: Goes to Kari Watkins for "Convention of Cormorants", taken at Bear Cove Marina in Port Hardy, BC.  Kari will thank us in future for introducing her to Pink Solution cleaning supplies.

Third Prize:  Laura Burns wins another for her "Say Cheese", which we hope she'll say when she takes a selfie in her new SeaHugger t-shirt!

 

Our sincere thanks to judge Andrew S. Wright for his services once again this year.  Thanks as well to all of our supporters, who voted Laura Burns yet another prize, the Seahugger’s Choice Award, also for  “Beachcomber’s Dream”.  Laura's prize is a lovely painting by Sointula's Jan Rosgen, Art for the Soul.

 

 


Our Judge

Andrew S. Wright is a passionate conservation photographer and has published two photography books arguing for increased environmental stewardship in B.C. His book Emeralds at the Edge  published in 2009 received positive reviews in the Globe and Mail. His current book Faltering Light proposes an end to trophy hunting of bears.

He is also technical advisor to the SOS Marine Conservation Foundation and the Tides Canada Aquaculture Innovation Fund. Since 2008 Andrew has played a lead technical role in the design of the Namgis FinFish aquaculture project. He is a contributor to the Great Bear Rainforest agreement and has travelled on numerous occasions to the region.
